Last night NBA TV – part of NBA Digital, which is jointly managed by Turner Sports and the National Basketball Association (NBA) – announced the winners of the 2013 Social Media Awards, which reward players’ and teams’ social media engagement during the 2012-2013 season. Fans voted for the awards via Twitter (using the hash tag #NBASMA) or via the NBA mobile website.

Basketball is known for its fast paced, down-to-the-buzzer plays, so naturally such impressive athleticism gets a lot of buzz on social media. Hence awards like the Epic and FTW awards are imperative in the social lineup.

The Epic Award highlights a... well epic regular season game. And this year the award went to the Heat vs Celtics, March 18 game where LeBron James scored 37 points and clinched the game to extend the Heat’s 23 game winning streak.

The FTW Award [For the Win] went to Monta Ellis for his off-balance shot that locked-up the win for the Milwaukee Bucks during the Rockets-Bucks game on February 27.

While the NBA rivalries are intense and can heat up the social media-sphere, the awards also celebrated some of the lighter moments of the season with awards like these:

The LOL Award, which went to the Nuggets’ JaVale McGee for the laugh out loud moments where he shot, passed and stumbled his way into blooper-dom.

The OMG Award went to the entire Miami Heat team for entertaining us with their dance sequence to the Harlem Shake.

Social media continues to be an important tool the NBA, its teams and players use to interact and engage with their fans. The NBA continues to stand as a leader in social media and the Social Media Awards help to recognize the significance of the connections they create with the fans.
