Move over men, there’s a new group of heroes in town! DC Comics recently announced a new initiative focusing its attention on young girls. Its new superhero franchise, DC Super Hero Girls, transforms the old-school status quo of male heroes.

"We realized there's this untapped opportunity,"Diane Nelson, President of DC Entertainment, told the Los Angeles Times. "There's clearly demand in the marketplace to serve the young girl market."

DC Super Hero Girls provides a new, youthful and feminist spin on classic comic book characters, making superheroes relevant to a younger set. The franchise involves  not only toys and games, but also an animated television series featuring iconic characters such as Wonder Woman and Bumblebee. Last October, DC released 10 shorts to act as a pilot for the series. Additionally, DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP), and Mattel will also offer a complementary app incorporating videos, games, and bios of the super heroes. DC partner Target will also debut an exclusive new line of Super Hero Girl toys, apparel, accessories, and games based on the franchise.

The superhero girls and their adventures will incorporate real-life situations that can motivate young, confident, talented youths to go above and beyond. The franchise is set to feature “stories of empowerment, inspiration and optimism that are relatable to girls” Nelson said, and adding "[Super Hero Girls] is changing the face of superhero culture, and we are really proud of that."
