On February 20, 1960, police officers placed Johnita Due’s mother in handcuffs as bystanders heckled her with racial slurs. The officers arrested the then 20-year-old Florida A&M University student for disorderly conduct after she and sixteen other protesters led a sit-in at Woolworth’s store in Tallahassee, Florida. Their goal was to end the store’s policy of serving only white customers at its lunch counter.

Patricia Stephens Due was presented with two options: pay the $300 fine or spend weeks in jail. She chose to stay in jail.

Time Warner Foundation Announces New Film Grantees

The Time Warner Foundation recently announced its newest film grantees. For this funding round, the Foundation selected seven organizations committed to developing and showcasing outstanding filmmakers. They support the Foundation’s mission to promote the next generation of storytellers for a global audience.

“For more than a decade now, the Time Warner Foundation has been committed to supporting the next generation of new and powerful storytellers who represent our changing American landscape,” said Lisa Garcia Quiroz, president of the Time Warner Foundation.
