CNN Receives Top Honors from IRE Awards

CNN correspondent Arwa Damon and photojournalist Sarmad Qaseera received the Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) medal for their coverage of the attack on the U.S Consulate in Benghazi. The medal is the highest honor bestowed in the annual IRE Awards competition, which recognizes the best in investigative reporting by print, broadcast and online media.

Judges commented that Damon and Qaseera “provided additional valuable context about the milieu in which the consulate attack occurred” and demonstrated “courageous reporting.” In addition to receiving the IRE Medal, their coverage also won in IRE’s Investigations Triggered by Breaking News category.

CNN Digital reporters John D. Sutter and Edythe McNamee were also honored for their report “Mauritania: Slavery's Last Stronghold,” which tied for a win with PBS in the Multiplatform – Large category. Judges noted that their investigation “upholds the highest ideals of journalism.”
