"Fantastic" News from WB and J.K. Rowling
Warner Bros. and J.K. Rowling are taking their relationship to the next level with the announcement of the first in a new film series, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, as well as broad expansion across the company's Harry Potter businesses.
The film, an original story and screenwriting debut for the best-selling author, will incorporate all of the magic and mysticism familiar to Harry Potter fans. However, rather than a prequel or a sequel to Harry Potter, Rowling describes her story as an "extension of the wizarding world," which takes place seventy years before Harry's tale and is centered around the adventures of Newt Scamander, the book's fictitious author.
On top of the film series, Fantastic Beasts will also come to life across multiple realms including video games, consumer products and digital initiatives. Additionally, as a result of the Warner Bros.-Rowling partnership, the Harry Potter brand will continue to expand and Warner Bros. will serve as the worldwide distributor (excluding UK) of the upcoming television adaptation of J.K. Rowling's book The Casual Vacancy.
"We are incredibly honored that Jo has chosen to partner with Warner Bros. on this exciting new exploration of the world of wizardry which has been tremendously successful across all of our businesses," said Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara in today's announcement. "We know that audiences will be as excited as we are to see what her brilliant and boundless imagination conjures up for us."
