UPDATE: In the spirit of the season, Time Warner employees got together this past Saturday to help prepare meals and gifts for the Capuchin / St. Francis Food Pantries & Shelters holiday party at The Shrine of St. Anthony of Padua Church Hall in downtown New York City (photo above). Volunteers served more than 300 adults and children at the holiday party, providing them with hot meals and some joyful cheer during the holiday season. In addition to those who volunteered on Saturday, many more employees donated toys, which were distributed to children of the St. Francis Food Pantries & Shelters as part of a longstanding Time Warner tradition (photo below).
Time Warner employees took time out of their busy schedules on Monday, December 16, to volunteer with the Food Bank for NYC at the Community Kitchen and Food Pantry in Harlem. The volunteers helped prepare recipes for dinner service, which hundreds of New Yorkers in need depend on each day. In the spirit of giving, participants also assembled gift bags and holiday items for community distribution.

On December 12, Impact volunteers gathered in the basement of 11 Penn Plaza (50 feet underground!), which serves as New York Cares' storage space for their annual coat drive. Employees helped organize hundreds of donations, sorting clothing into meticulous piles of categories ranging from winter coats and light jackets to vests to dresses, which were then bagged and stored for easy distribution.
Donations to the New York Cares Coat Drive are drastically low this year, but you can help! The coat drive extends through February 7, 2014, and there are drop-off locations throughout New York City (click here to find one near you). They are most in need of winter coats, specifically larger-sized men's coats and young children's coats. Don’t have a used coat? Consider purchasing a coat to keep a fellow New Yorker warm this winter!
Carol White, a Director of Transport & Logistics for Time Warner, shared her experience volunteering with colleagues at the New York Common Pantry. Read her story below:
I volunteered at a Day of Impact event (our company-wide employee giving program) with Time Warner's Controller group on December 5 at the New York Common Pantry in East Harlem, which was organized through New York Cares. The Common Pantry provides groceries to more than 1,800 families every two weeks. We had 23 participants assigned to either a morning or afternoon three-hour shift. This was my third year volunteering for this very worthy cause. We are developing this into an annual event between Thanksgiving and New Year's, though clearly there is need year round. The event combines team building and volunteering because the work is highly collaborative.
This year, we helped break down bulk cartons of produce into smaller quantities for placement in grocery bags, place each client’s order on an iPad, and fill those orders into one, two or three bags of groceries depending on the size of each client’s family (see photo at left; click to enlarge). The food items listed on the iPad menu are customized to include items that are currently available in the pantry and appear in the language each client has previously registered under. The items are organized by food group such as protein, grains, fruits, vegetables and dairy with quantities specified for each group based on each client’s family size. The orders are electronically transmitted upstairs in the pantry area and printed on a label for immediate processing into bags with a timely hand-off to the clients who have come upstairs to receive their bi-weekly groceries. We were constantly on the move performing the tasks assigned to each one of us.
I was struck by just how critical volunteers are in the overall operation of the Common Pantry in order to fulfill its mission to provide groceries to those in need. We walked away knowing that we had made a real difference that day, hoping that the Common Pantry has enough volunteers every day to make this worthy cause’s operation hum.
Earlier this month, employees from Turner Broadcasting's Digital Services department signed up as a team to volunteer with Only Make Believe, a nonprofit organization that brings professional actors into hospital wards to entertain children with chronic illnesses and disabilities.
The employees visited Bellevue Hospital in New York City to help decorate the children’s playroom in advance of the show, and to throw a party for patients following the performance with goody bags, snacks, temporary tattoos and face painting.
