Here’s Looking at You Kid…and Sam’s Piano
November 24 is going to be a big day for classic movie fans. Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and international fine art auctioneers Bonhams are coming together for the TCM Presents: There’s No Place Like Hollywood Auction. The auction will highlight memorabilia from the classic and unforgettable film Casablanca and will include the piano played by Dooley Wilson (a.k.a Sam) at Rick’s Café Américain, as well as passports, transit papers and other documents created for the film. Additional pieces will be auctioned off from classic Hollywood, including the test dress for Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz, a costume worn by Rita Hayworth in the film Gilda, along with many other iconic items.
Dennis Adamovich, Senior Vice President of Digital, Affiliate, Lifestyle and Enterprise Commerce at TCM, TBS & TNT, said in a press release, “Casablanca has long been one of the most beloved of Hollywood’s wartime classics and continues to be one of the most popular films in the Turner Classic Movies library. With the addition of this extraordinary collection of Casablanca memorabilia, TCM and Bonhams’ There’s No Place Like Hollywood Auction is going to be a truly unforgettable and historic event.”
As part of the event, TCM will contribute a portion of the auction proceeds to The Film Foundation, an organization dedicated to protecting and preserving motion picture history. If you don’t think your pockets run deep enough to purchase a piece of iconic Hollywood history but you’d still like to check out the goods, previews of the exhibitions will be held at Bonhams in New York November 20-24 and at their Los Angeles location November 6-9.
