Fit Nation Status Report: Highly Active in 2014
By Ana Villarreal
So far this year, Time Warner’s employee health and wellness program, Fit Nation, grew with even more events in even more cities and countries around the world. Hundreds of employees from across the globe have taken part in walks, run and triathlons in order to get healthy and stay active. While there are still more Fit Nation events to come this year, we wanted to check in on the 2014 season so far, so we spoke with our company’s six divisional coaches and asked them to share their thoughts and experiences with us. See what they had to say below.

The great thing about Time Warner Fit Nation is that you don’t have to go at it alone – the Fit Nation community grows larger year by year. From the person who decided to just start moving this year, to the person who opted to put in the work to become a triathlete, I am proud to be alongside them on their journey. I think it’s always healthy to compete, and there are all kinds of levels of that. While many of us veterans are competing against our previous race times, new athletes are competing against the unknown, body limitations, habitual inactivity, fear of failure, etc. Our newest athletes show that everyone can challenge themselves: be faster, go longer, just go.

Each year, I am amazed by the life changing experiences colleagues have had by participating in the Time Warner Fit Nation program. Whether it’s picking up the healthy habit of walking 1,000 steps more a day or by adopting the sport of triathlon as a new favorite hobby, it’s incredible to see how the experiences have benefited employees overall well-being, not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. And the Fit Nation program is not only about getting people up and moving, it’s about comradery and relationships between colleagues and friends. It doesn’t matter if you’re an avid athlete or if you’re a true beginner…it also doesn’t matter what department you’re coming from or what your title is. What matters is the unified spirit and enthusiasm the program fosters. Fit Nation captures the essence of our company’s culture at its best.

Fit Nation’s 2014 programme had a new look and feel, “Fitness Loves Company” was the slogan and it certainly does. This was the biggest year yet in the UK with the number of events and the sheer number of participants. We also welcomed France, Italy, Germany and Spain into the programme, with new-comers Germany walking away with the Walking Challenge.
Fit Nation offers employees the chance to improve year-on-year no matter fitness levels, from the walking challenge to the 88-mile cycling Etape, there is something for everyone. And 2015 promises to be bigger and better, in a recent survey 100% of employees said they would recommend Fit Nation to a colleague and we are pleased to be bringing a wider range of events to the calendar with the aim of inspiring more colleagues to take up a challenge.

The 2014 Fit Nation program definitely lived up to its theme of “BIG.” For the New York area, we added the three tracks for improving running performance. Along with a new coaching staff, the added running tracks brought more employees into the program while at the same time triathlon training became more fine-tuned. The new coaching groups added a level of skill that helped many first-time athletes conquer their concerns of competing in events that they were uncomfortable with.
The team grew in size and scope with six finishers getting on the podium for finishing in the top three in their categories. It was a great year.

This year’s Fit Nation program further validates the career choice I made, and why I love what I do. The growth and courage I’ve witnessed from those that took part in our events is a testament to the success of the program and, only because of it, do we have a clearer understanding of what it means to challenge oneself and overcome our fears.
Alma Colon, HBO, New York, NY
To take on something that you have never done before, just because you want to know if you can do it, to push your body to the limit, just because you are now starting to believe, and to support friends and colleagues on their quest for a higher quality of life ….That is the essence of Fit Nation and I am honored to be a small part of it.
