Gathering, and Celebrating, Next Generation Storytellers

Time Warner once again sponsored the annual Future of Storytelling Summit, which took place this week in NYC. The interactive conference is designed for media, tech and communications visionaries around the world to come together and discover new ways to connect with audiences through storytelling.
The two-day summit included a ferry ride around Manhattan to the Snug Harbor Cultural Center where intimate roundtable discussions, master classes, a Story Arcade exhibit and workshops were held. Attendees spent the second day on the Story Crawl, a tour of some of Manhattan and Brooklyn’s most creative storytelling studios which was followed by visits to three companies for a first-hand look into their concept development, creative process, and experimental storytelling strategies.
Time Warner also presented the inaugural FoST Prize this year, launching a global competition to celebrate technology’s profound impact on the interactivity, emotional engagement and of course the many means of delivering and consuming stories. The search was on for the most innovative storyteller to create an interactive narrative with various dimensions.
Contestants were narrowed down to three finalists on Wednesday. The Jury, which included Time Warner’s Tamir Muhammad, Director, Content & Artist Development, Corporate Responsibility, announced the winner of the $10,000 cash prize which went to "Possibilia" – a multilayered narrative directed by acclaimed director duo The Daniels. Created by the digital media company Interlude, the story allows viewers to choose how a messy breakup plays out on-screen by allowing them to switch between 30 scenarios, all with identical dialogs, resulting in a nearly infinite number of unique combinations.
"Possibilia is absolutely brilliant!,” said Robert Wong, Chief Creative Officer, Google Creative Lab and member of the FoST Jury selection panel. “The story is about hard choices, and by placing the user in that experience and allowing them to pick which story to follow -- without being gimmicky -- actually underscored and enhanced the story in a way that resonated with me long after.”
