GoT: Summer School with Dothraki Creator
By her own account, it only took Daenerys Targaryen a year to learn Dothraki, the language of her husband, Khal Drogo. Now, the creator of Dothraki is offering a class at UC Berkeley that will help fans understand what goes on in the mind of people speaking a new language.
David J. Peterson—the linguist who also invented High Valyrian—will be teaching “The Linguistics of Game of Thrones and the Art of Language Invention” this summer. In the class, students will learn how to create their own language, and how the sounds, word meanings and grammar of natural languages have evolved. Instead of learning how to speak Dothraki, students will investigate “what problem the speakers were trying to solve, and how they did it, and why. It’s an entirely different lens through which to view language,” said Peterson in this article from UC Berkeley.
