Another Fantastic Classic (Film Festival)

30 Apr 2018 - By TW Staff

Like the swallows to Capistrano, classic film lovers know there's one place to return year after year: the TCM Classic Film Festival, which just wrapped its four-day 2018 celebration this past Sunday.

The weekend got off to a star-studded bang on Thursday's opening night, when legendary director Martin Scorsese was honored with the inaugural Robert Osborne Award in recognition of his work as a film preservationist. Leonardo DiCaprio introduced his long-time collaborator and presented him with the award.

On Friday, Emmy- and Tony Award-winner (and Oscar- and Golden Globe-nominee) Cicely Tyson was honored with a hand and footprint ceremony at the world-famous TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood. From her acclaimed performance in the groundbreaking film Sounder (1972) to her work in the seminal television movies Roots (1977) and The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman (1974) to her award-winning role in the Broadway revival The Trip to Bountiful (2013), Tyson has been an tireless performer and a champion of civil liberties for decades.

L to R: Charlie Tabesh, SVP, Programming and Production; Pola Changnon, SVP, Brand Creative and Marketing, TCM; Jennifer Dorian, General Manager, TCM; Mel Brooks; Martin Scorsese; John Martin, Chairman and CEO, Turner; Coleman Breland, President TCM and Turner Content Experiences; Ben Mankiewicz, TCM Primetime Host; Genevieve McGillicuddy, Director, TCMCFF.

Saturday's highlights included "Through a Lens of Color: Black Representation in Film," a compelling discussion about how portrayals of African Americans on film evolved over time, and how black filmmakers persevered to finally tell their stories and share their history through their own lens. It featured Gil Robertson IV, of the African American Film Critics Association, Professor Jacqueline Stewart, filmmaker Mario Van Peebles and was moderated by Donald Bogle.

Once again, the TCM Classic Film Festival proved to be a place where movie lovers from around the world can gather to experience classic movies as they were meant to be experienced: on the big screen, in some of the world’s most iconic venues, with the people who made them.
