Movies & the ‘Maverick’: Ted Turner to be honored at TCM Film Fest
Thanks to TCM, there’s even more to love at the movies this month. Starting Thursday, April 11, Turner Classic Movies will be rolling out the red carpet to celebrate love in all its forms at the 10th annual TCM Classic Film Festival.
As fans flock to the heart of Hollywood for the momentous occasion, TCM will be preparing to pay tribute to the man whose passion for preserving films started it all: Ted Turner.
The media mogul will be in attendance on opening night of the festival, where TCM will be saluting its founder with a special video tribute and an exclusive interview in honor of the network’s 25th anniversary.
TCM host Ben Mankiewicz had the opportunity to sit down with Turner, exploring the media giant’s cultural impact on the film and television industry.
“Without Ted Turner there simply would be no Turner Classic Movies. Ted’s maverick spirit saw the potential in utilizing Hollywood’s great film libraries on a TV network that could serve as a home for these iconic classics,” said Jennifer Dorian, general manager – TCM. “There is no greater place to honor his work and his legacy than at the TCM Classic Film Festival while the brand celebrates its 25th anniversary - a milestone we couldn’t have reached without Ted’s incredible vision.”
For indeed, Turner’s genuine appreciation and admiration of classic films sparked a revolutionary organization, giving generations both young and old a place to savor age-old cinema.
“Turner Classic Movies was a passion project of mine, born of my love for classic films,” said Ted Turner. “I’m very proud to have played a role in honoring these great works through the years, and hope they continue to provide just as much joy and entertainment to TCM viewers as they have to me.”
Just as Turner wished, the films that air on TCM continue to captivate audiences of all ages. But nothing dazzles and delights TCM fans quite like its annual film festival.
This year’s 10th annual TCM Classic Film Festival has a lot to celebrate and boasts an incredible line-up of movies and events to reflect its historic nature.
The agenda for opening night is explosive, with a 30th anniversary screening of the seminal romantic comedy, “When Harry Met Sally.” The film’s stars including Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan, and director/producer Rob Reiner will be in attendance, celebrating the film’s return to the big screen.
Over a period of four jam-packed days and nights, guests will be treated to an impressive schedule filled with classic films, iconic stars and filmmakers, inspiring presentations, exclusive events and more.
One of the most significant events of the weekend is set to take place Saturday, April 13, when pioneer filmmaker Kevin Brownlow will receive the 2nd annual Robert Osborne Award.
