Hagrid comes to life with new roller coaster at Universal Orlando’s Harry Potter world
Rubeus Hagrid would indeed approve, as the world of Harry Potter just got a lot bigger this week. Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, a new immersive roller coaster, debuted with lots of star power in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park in Orlando, Florida.
This new, over-the-top thrill ride inside of Hogsmeade revolves around the Harry Potter character Hagrid, Hogwarts’ groundskeeper and a gentle giant with a big heart. The ride cars are exact replicas of Hagrid’s flying motorbike, and since there are no overhead restraints, you’ll feel like you’re soaring through the Forbidden Forest.
A preview event held earlier this week gave fans the chance to test out the new ride and come face to face with many stars of the “Harry Potter” film series. Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy), Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood), Warwick Davis (Professor Flitwick) and James & Oliver Phelps (Fred & George Weasley) were all in attendance to celebrate the opening.
The film stars waved their wands and recited the iconic “Wingardium Leviosa” spell to remove Hagrid’s supplies for tending magical creatures that were occupying the attraction’s entrance. Suddenly trunks, storage containers and more flew away, officially opening Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure with a touch of Wizarding World magic. Robbie Coltrane, who portrays Hagrid in the “Harry Potter” films and is the star of the new adventure, helped to commemorate the magical moment.
“I’m excited to welcome you to this new chapter of magic here at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter,” said Coltrane. “Be sure to hang onto your motorbike, and most importantly, have fun everyone.”
Featuring an actual forest with more than 1,200 trees, groundbreaking coaster technology and a captivating storyline, Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure is the world’s first “story coaster” – taking theme park experiences to a whole new level.
This groundbreaking roller coaster, which hits speeds of up to 50 mph, has more launch points than any other coaster in the world, meaning there are seven areas where you are launched forward and backwards at a moment’s notice. You’ll be whisked through castle ruins, and on to an animatronic version of Hagrid himself.
“This is a whole new level of themed roller coasters,” says Thierry Coup, senior vice president of Universal Creative. “It will blow your mind. One of the most innovative things on this roller coaster is really the drop-track moment, which is the only one of its kind in the U.S., where you really free fall.”
There’s even a special surprise at the end of the ride, featuring a creature you would have not seen alive in the Harry Potter films – but you’ll have to try Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure for yourself to see that one.
