MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 5, 2000 On the heels of its most successful quarter ever, iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions, a Sun-Netscape Alliance, today announced that its Netscape(tm) Application Server 4.0 achieved the highest overall score in a new head-to-head comparison of application server products from three leading vendors. In one of the most extensive benchmark tests ever published on web application servers, independent researcher D.H. Brown Associates found Netscape Application Server 4.0 and IBM's WebSphere Enterprise Edition in a dead heat as the most capable application servers on the market, significantly ahead of IBM's WebSphere Advanced Edition and BEA's WebLogic. In addition to sharing the overall lead, the iPlanet product outperformed all competitors products in the areas critical for e-business success, including, scalability, availability, security and management. The new report comes just as iPlanet prepares to ship its highly anticipated iPlanet(tm) Application Server 6.0, an all-new version designed to further extend iPlanet's leadership as the industry's most reliable, scalable and secure web application platform. The new 6.0 release also breaks new ground in support of the Java(tm) 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE(tm)) specification by enabling "business ready" features such as stateful session failover of Enterprise JavaBeans(tm), servlet and JavaServer(tm) Pages (JSP) load balancing and result caching. "It's extremely gratifying to see results like this as we prepare to launch our most powerful new application server ever," said Joe Keller, vice president of application server products for iPlanet. "The new iPlanet Application Server 6.0 extends our technical leadership even further and fulfills iPlanet's commitment to deliver a single, next-generation application server for companies deploying large, transactional web sites, business portals and digital marketplaces." "Of the leading application servers we evaluated, we found iPlanet's Netscape Application Server rated at the top of its class," said Tony Iams, Senior Analyst at D. H. Brown Associates, Inc. "We rated each product for its support of more than 90 functional items across six areas, including: scalability and reliability functions, security services, web presentation services, object monitoring services, transaction services, and administration services and were extremely impressed by the product's overall functional capabilities." In addition to sharing the highest overall rating, D.H Brown found that iPlanet significantly outscored all competitors in the following categories: #1 Availability and scalability - complete support for both clustering failover and load-balancing functions to handle the demands of mission-critical applications. #1 Security - the best auditing capabilities, superior support for roles and a broad selection of options for client authentication. #1 Management - detailed real-time server performance metrics and SNMP support, as well as a complete set of logging and administrative functions.
