NEW YORK-- Warner Music International set a company record last week by shipping 3 million copies of Madonna's new album Music world-wide, excluding the US. The album also entered 15 international charts around the world at number one.
WMI Senior Vice President Marketing, Jay Durgan said; "Firstly we would never be able to increase our level of sales performance were it not for the great music Madonna, the Corrs, Alejandro Sanz, Green Day and many others provided for us as we move into the fourth quarter. I'm particularly proud of our companies for not only setting WMI shipment records but also for their sell-through marketing."
The album Music entered the album charts in Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan and the UK at number one and also shipped platinum in Australia and New Zealand. The success of the album Music follows the title track hitting the number one spot in seven European territories in addition to topping the chart in Australia and Canada.
Music is Madonna's Maverick/Warner Bros. follow-up to her 1998 album Ray Of Light, which topped the 7 million sales mark in WMI territories around the world and was the previous biggest album shipment in WMI's history at 2.5 million.
A second single "Don't Tell Me" is set for release in mid-November to tie-in with a planned European promotional trip by Madonna which will include selected TV appearances.
Commenting on the European success of Music, Thomas Starckjohann, Vice President Marketing Warner Music Europe, added; "We are confident, in the light of these ship-out figures, the reaction from customers, retail and media throughout Europe and our ongoing marketing campaigns, that this album will remain a best seller for the rest of this year and well into 2001."
WMI, a division of the Warner Music Group, has its headquarters in New York with offices in London and operates in 65 countries through a network of 47 affiliates, 26 licensees and several associated labels.
