Cartoon Network concludes summer 2001 with a string of "personal best" ratings and delivery figures for many of its top-rated original series. Dexter's Laboratory, The Powerpuff Girls, Courage the Cowardly Dog and Johnny Bravo each achieved their strongest episodic ratings and delivery ever during the summer period (May 28 - Aug. 26).
- On July 31, Dexter's Laboratory (9 p.m.) scored the highest household rating (2.9) and delivery (2,166,000 homes) of any Cartoon Network telecast to date in 2001.
- On Aug. 21, The Powerpuff Girls (9:30 p.m.) earned its highest household rating (2.6) and delivery (1,973,000 homes) ever.
- Courage the Cowardly Dog dug up its best-ever ratings and delivery on June 22 at 10 p.m. with tweens 9-14 (4.8, 820,000), kids 6-11 (7.0, 1,168,000) and kids 2-11 (7.0, 1,890,000).
- Johnny Bravo boasted its highest household rating (2.6) and delivery ever (1,953,000), plus his best demographic ratings and delivery tweens 9-14 (5.1, 882,000) and kids 6-11 (7.4, 1,266,000) for the July 31 telecast at 9:30 p.m.
For the entire summer ratings period, Cartoon Network earned a 1.3 total day household rating, tying for second place (with Lifetime) among ad-supported cable networks. This performance equaled last year's second-place finish, also with a 1.3 average household rating. Cartoon Network also tied Nickelodeon for first place in total day ratings (1.3) among ad-supported cable networks for the week of June 11, the first time since 1995. In prime time, Cartoon Network completed summer 2001 tied for second place (with USA) with a 1.8 household rating, down 10 percent from last year's second-place finish with a 2.0 average rating.
The network's overall summer performance is further punctuated by several new ratings and delivery records. Cartoon Network posted its highest monthly total day ratings ever with tweens 9-14 (1.8), kids 6-11 (2.8) and kids 2-11 (2.8) in July. Delivery for these key demographics peaked in July with tweens 9-14 (306,000), and in August with kids 6-11 (476,000) and kids 2-11 (776,000). Households also tied the best-ever monthly total day rating of 1.3 in July and set an all-time monthly delivery record of 945,000 homes. Additionally in July, Cartoon Network posted the largest net increase (+61 percent) of any ad-supported cable network in total day delivery of adults 18-34 (217,000 viewers). In fact, the network ranked third in total day delivery of adults 18-34 among all ad-supported cable networks.
Additional summer ratings highlights include the Aug. 17 premiere of Samurai Jack (1.3 household rating, 980,000 homes) which earned triple-digit rating and delivery increases across all key demographics except with kids 2-11, which grew by double-digits. With a total of 29,320,000 different viewers, the annual June Bugs marathon (June 1, 11 p.m. - June 3, 12 a.m.) scored a 1.6 household rating and delivered an average 1,146,000 homes, up 14 percent and 25 percent, respectively, vs. last year. Likewise, the Ed-dependence Day Marathon (July 4, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.) charted a 1.7 household rating and delivered 1,239,000 homes, up 21 percent and 43 percent, respectively, vs. the same time period last year.
