Cartoon Network Claims Kids 2-11 Prime Time Ratings Crown for Fourth Straight Year

ADULT SWIM Leads Network to Largest Net Gain of Men 18-34 and 18-24 in All Basic Cable

Fourth Quarter '03 Also Earns Double-Digit Prime Time Gains among Kids 6-11 and Kids 2-11

In a banner year that brought 86% new original and newly acquired programming to Cartoon Network vs. 2002, three key original series-Codename: Kids Next Door, Teen Titans and Duck Dodgers-rocketed to top rankings for delivery and ratings of targeted kid demos, according to Nielsen Media Research. The performance of these new originals, coupled with new episodes of existing hit shows, helped Cartoon Network claim the 2003 #1 ranking for prime time delivery of kids 2-11 (1,058,000), boys 2-11 (709,000) and boys 6-11 (484,000) for the fourth straight year. Prime time delivery of kids 6-11 (635,000, up 2%) also earned the network a #2 ranking among ad-supported cable networks.

Leading the prime time performance, Cartoon Network's revamped FRIDAYS (7 p.m.-12 a.m., launched Oct. 3)-now featuring young hosts Tommy and Nzinga and a live studio audience-earned across-the-board double-digit delivery increases in fourth quarter '03. Versus 2002, kids 2-11 delivery (1,110,000) grew an average 20% and kids 6-11 delivery (726,000) increased an average 28%.

The year also proved that kids aren't the only audience that loves cartoons. Thanks to the phenomenal performance of ADULT SWIM in strip (launched Jan. 12, Sunday-Thursday, 11 p.m.-2 a.m.), Cartoon Network achieved the largest total day net gain of men 18-34 (+29,000 average viewers) and men 18-24 (+20,000 average viewers) among all basic cable. The late-night franchise ranked #1 in 2003 for its time period among all basic cable for delivery of adults 18-34, adults 18-24 and men 18-24, earning triple-digit increases across the board.

Highlights of Cartoon Network's 2003 performance vs. the same time periods in 2002 include the following:

Codename: Kids Next Door (premiered Dec. 6, 2002)

  • Friday 10 p.m. telecast average ranked #1 Cartoon Network program of the year with kids 2-11, kids 6-11, boys 2-11 and boys 6-11.
  • 2003 average vs. '02 kids 2-11 delivery (1,368,000) grew 3% and ratings (3.4) by 3%. Kids 6-11 delivery (909,000) increased by 10% and ratings (3.7) by 12%.

Teen Titans(premiered July 19, 2003)

  • Weekend plays (Saturdays, 12 p.m. & 9 p.m./Sundays, 10 p.m.) average double-digit growth across all demos vs. 2002 time periods.
  • Kids 2-11 average delivery (1,021,000) and ratings (2.6) both improved by 30%. Kids 6-11 delivery (653,000) expanded by 47% and ratings (2.7) by 50%. Tweens 9-14 delivery (522,000) grew by 68% and ratings (2.1) by 75%.

Duck Dodgers (premiered Aug. 23, 2003)

  • Weekend plays (Saturdays, 11:30 a.m. & 4 p.m./Sundays, 8:30 p.m.) averaged double-digit growth across the board vs. 2002.
  • Kids 2-11 average delivery (921,000) and ratings (2.3) both increased by 15%. Kids 6-11 delivery (524,000) jumped by 21% and ratings (2.2) by 22%. Tweens 9-14 delivery (336,000) grew by 28% and ratings (1.4) by 40%. FRIDAYS (premiered Oct. 3, 2003)
  • Kids 2-11 delivery (1,110,000) grew by 20% and kids 6-11 delivery (726,000) by 28%. Boys 2-11 delivery (773,000) expanded by 22% and boys 6-11 delivery (560,000) by 39%. Girls 2-11 delivery (338,000) improved by 15%.

ADULT SWIM (premiered in strip Jan. 12, 2003)

  • Ranked #1 in its time period on basic cable for delivery of all targeted young adult demos-adults 18-34 (378,000, up 104% vs. '02), adults 18-24 (218,000, up 132%), men 18-34 (273,000, up 160%) and men 18-24 (165,000, up 170%).
  • Ratings-wise, Adult Swim has also scored triple-digit growth among all young adult demos-adults 18-34 (0.6, up 100%), adults 18-24 (0.8, up 100%), men 18-34 (0.8, up 167%) and men 18-24 (1.2, up 140%).
  • Cartoon Network ranked #6 in total day delivery of adults 18-34 among all basic cable-its highest annual finish ever with the young adult demo.
  • Cartoon Network ranked #3 in total day delivery of adults 18-24 among all basic cable-its highest annual finish ever with the young adult demo.
  • Adult Swim's most popular program, Family Guy (premiered April 20, 2003), has since posted significant triple-digit delivery and ratings gains vs. the same time period last year. Delivery increases include adults 18-34 (up 252%), adults 18-24 (up 360%), men 18-34 (up 438%) and men 18-24 (up 531%).

Fourth Quarter '03

  • In prime time, Cartoon Network posted double-digit fourth-quarter gains among all key demos vs. '02 - kids 2-11 delivery (1,016,000) increased 10%, kids 6-11 delivery (598,000) increased 13%.
  • In total day, Cartoon Network charted across-the-board gains vs. '02-kids 2-11 delivery (621,000) improved 9% and kids 6-11 delivery (343,000) jumped 7%.
